Mozilla & Friends

Many browsers are around and Internet Explorer is by far the most widely spread browser software on Windows systems.

However, Mozilla has become a good alternative.

Not to mention the range of operation systems (including Mac and Linux), Mozilla can easily be used with.

I got the impression that Mozilla provides more features and user configurable options than IE currently does. In particular, the many "add on projects" extend the browser's capabilities dramatically.
Some of them have proven very handy in my everyday use of this software.
Mouse Gestures  (home page) Optimoz Poster
By means of this add on, it is possible to navigate through WWW pages with a few simple mouse movements. I found that some of the defined gestures allow by far faster navigation and save the distractive mouse clicks on specific buttons (e.g. Moving the mouse to the left allows to go back in surf history and thus saves the positioning of the mouse on the back button). The are Mouse Gestures for Navigation, Tabbed Browsing, Image Control, Link activation as well as Source, Cookie, Meta Tag and Bookmark gestures.

Preferences Toolbar  (home page) Preferences Toolbar - Prefbar
Some web pages provide good contents but use a hardly readable colour and font design. Walking through the preferences menu in order to override the document setting with default font and colour setting often was to tidious and akward for me and I preferred to leave the page missing out on the actual information contained in it.
However, the Preferences Toolbar provides a fast access to such internal preference settings, which are represented as simple buttons or selection lists. This toolbar can be configured to only show those entries that one wants to use more often. A simple shortcut ('F8') makes the bar appear/disappear in order not to spend valuable display space on this add on feature. The Toolbar provides Navigation Buttons (Back, Forward, Reload,Stop, Home), Checkboxes for Preferences settings (Images, Fonts, Colors, JavaScript, Java, PopUps, Cookies, Proxy settings, etc.), Utility Functions (Clear Cache, Clear History, Clear Location Bar, etc.), User Agent Spoof (Netscape 4.7 or 6.2 / Internet Explorer 5.0 or 6.0), comprehensive Help and a Customization button to change the toolbar configuration.
Firefox 1.0PR users might also try this Prefbar 2.3.0.

Alt Text as Tooltip  (home page)
The "ALT" information in the html image tag defines the text, which is display instead of the image in text only browser software. However, Netscape started to display this text when a user hovers over an image on the displayed page. Internet Explorer now also shows the same behaviour. Clearly, this usage of the ALT text is not conform with its original definition and Mozilla therefore refuses to implement this feature after a long discussion. However, some users and page programmers have got used to it and rely upon it. Mozilla provides the application interface which easily allows to add this behaviour. Piro (SHIMODA Hiroshi) provides the necessary code on his site to have the ALT text displayed as Tooltip again.

Diggler Button (home page)
Diggler is a small but powerful add-on for Mozilla. It adds a button next to the location bar which can clear the location bar but also drops down a menu with some useful actions such as being able to disable popup windows and navigate to parent directories in URLs (handy for FTP operations and nested sites).

If you would like to use Mozilla the same way as I do, you can simply follow the steps below:

  1. Install the latest version of Mozilla...

  2. Install the Mouse Gestures ... (local copy)

  3. Install the Preferences Toolbar ... (local copy)

  4. Install the Popup_Alt_as_Tooltip ... (local copy)

  5. Install the Diggler Button ... (local copy)

Mozilla regularily releases new software versions. To my mind, it is best to uninstall mozilla before installing the new release. The bookmarks and preferences etc. are not affected. However, older Mozilla versions, it is necessary to reinstall the mouse gestures and preferences toolbar after this update process. Newer releases even continue to use the add on code straight away.

The result may look like this:
